In reviews of their first two albums, Rat Race Vacation and Dogfight, New York City’s Regenerated Headpiece (or RHP) was described as everything from “old school” to “futuristic”, and compared to recording artists ranging from A Tribe Called Quest to “Weird” Al Yankovic. But perhaps RapReviews.com said it best when, in their favorable review of Rat Race Vacation, they wrote: “Regenerated Headpiece brings a style of lyrics and beats that doesn't sound a whole lot like anything else.”
RHP’s unique music has captured worldwide attention, garnering reviews and interviews in five languages. Rat Race Vacation was released to encouraging notices from magazines like Vice, Elemental, Hip Hop Connection (UK) and Insomniac, while Dogfight was named one of the year’s top 10 albums by New York Newsday and received praise from magazines like Future Music (UK) and Smooth. It also caught the ear of writer Robert Lanham who, in his bestseller The Hipster Handbook, listed RHP as a “Newer Band Kicking Some Ass This Decade” alongside acts like EL-P and RJD2.
Now Regenerated Headpiece is proud to announce the release of their third album, The New Animal. This 14-song album displays RHP at their very best, with songs that vary from serious to the absurd, traditional to experimental and back again. And, as a special bonus, The New Animal includes two songs featuring their old friend and supporter of many years, the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy.
After publicly praising “Elements” as one of his favorite songs in a national magazine column, Chuck D licensed 8 RHP songs for digital release on his Slamjamz label. When Public Enemy’s Revolverlution World Tour came to The World Times Square, Chuck asked RHP to open up the show. And now, with the release of The New Animal, Chuck has honored RHP with his collaboration.
Regenerated Headpiece’s music has been licensed to Bomb Hip Hop Records, Slamjamz Records, Kaiju Big Battel, The Independent Film Channel, Graffiti Verite, DJ Lord (of Public Enemy), Lickwood Labs, and was most recently selected by super-producer Just Blaze (Jay-Z, Kanye West) to appear on the nationally released compilation album, Fresh Cuts: Volume 3.
Regenerated Headpiece has also done an impressive number of live performances and has been fortunate enough to open up for such notable acts as legendary DJ/producer Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, De La Soul, Gravediggaz), Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), Dilated Peoples, Blackalicious, The Sound of Urchin, Arsonists, and many of the finest groups of the hip hop underground.
WHO OR WHAT IS REGENERATED HEADPIECE?
The music of Regenerated Headpiece incorporates the contributions of dozens of collaborators, including the following core members:
PHON-X has been writing rhymes, making beats and recording songs for his entire life. His sharp, witty rhymes are built upon a foundation of raw wordplay and cleverness undercut by a political bent which serves to set him apart from other emcees. As a producer, Phon-X combines influences felt in every type of organized noise recorded or otherwise to create wholly original tracks complete with deeply rich sonic landscapes.
SHRED LEXICON’s job is to write rhymes and spit rhymes. So that’s what he does. And nobody else does it quite like him. Listening to Shred Lexicon rhyme is, as one reviewer put it, “like skydiving on acid.” Another mused “Shred Lexicon maniacally releases words as if they’re knocking around in his brain, threatening to drive him crazy.”
DJ EXFYL is a former DJ Records Battle Top Ten Finalist and is known best for his ill scratching style, in which he rips combo after combo using basic techniques as well as more advanced techniques ranging from a transform scratch to a two-click flare.
DJ SYKOPATH has scratched for members of Slipknot & Biohazard and has shared the stage with legendary electronica acts such as Rabbit in the Moon, DJ Q-Bert, Frankie Bones, Aphrodite and AK1200. In addition to continually performing all over the United States, Sykopath has played for large crowds in Holland, Italy and Switzerland.
OLD YIST is one of RHP’s founding members and has added co-production on several tracks. He has fans around the world for his online radio show and has released records in both the U.S. and Japan.
