Consisting of Brian Hardgroove- Moral Combat (bass guitar), Khari- Edged Weapons (guitar), Mike- Demolitions (drums ). DJ Lord- Sniper (turntables), and Johnny Juice- Unconventional Warfare (turntables percussion), The BaNNed has acted as resident backing band for Public Enemy’s live shows. Hardgroove, Khari, Mike and DJ Lord received an enormous amount of accolades for helping take PE’s show to a higher level. After brainstorming post show in Boston, Hardgroove suggested to the other musicians that they consider recording material to sell it along with other PE merchandise at the shows. _The idea was well received, and slow brewed over a two year period. DJ Johnny Juice would join the group as well during this period, as the original studio DJ for Public Enemy, well know for his contributions to the early classic albums.
Hardgroove brought a background of work with Chuck D on projects outside of PE and understood PE’s music and message. His idea and skills teamed with Khari. who had been recruited into the PE fold by Professor Griff around the same time Hardgroove joined. He had been playing the Memphis music circuit for a while before getting the call. Khari’s wide musical palette allows the group to take departures rarely attempted by contemporary bands.
The brilliant conglomerate is topped with DJ Lord (also a Professor Griff recruit), who was at the head of a short list to replace the legendary Terminator X upon his retirement. Lord has been a consistent winner of international DJ contests. His sheer athleticism on the turntables has brought the house down many times during PE concerts. Rounding out The BaNNed, Mike was able to pass the stringent requirements of filling the drum seat for Public Enemy, with an ability to play with sequences and drum machines as musical tools for with sound dexterity. All bring a fiery element of audio power as the force collectively called The BaNNed.
