GAMBIT . . . LAYING IT DOWN SUPERSONICALLY

SLAMjamz’s European artist, Gambit, collaborated with Kerwin Young to bring us “Supersonic,” for the soundtrack for upcoming movie about basketball Hall of Famer, Spencer Haywood. By the way, Chuck has a track and also does the narration for the film.

The SPITslam Group (Kate G): You just released your single, “Jagwarr” on SLAMjamz and you are now back in the studio recording “Supersonic,” for the Spencer Haywood movie coming out, “Full Court.” For those who don’t know, Spencer Haywood is a Hall of Fame basketball player who was responsible for changing the eligibility rules for the NBA.  Tell us about what went in to writing your rap for “Supersonic” to capture Spencer Haywood. Also, Kerwin Young who lives in the States, came up with the track for the song.  How do you collaborate when you two are separated by the Atlantic?

Gambit: My “Goal” on "Supersonic" was to capture Spencer Haywood's strong attitude, his outstanding qualities as player, and the suspense that surrounded him when he started playing for the Supersonics. It was truly a significant time when he entered the NBA after winning this rule changing case, I wanted to display his unique status in the history of Basketball as well as his dominance on the court in my lyrics. His presence in the league was groundbreaking and polarizing at the same time, nobody has done what he did, that's why he had a lot of fans and but also some people who didn't want to acknowledge his achievements simply because he had the courage to do something that others would be afraid of. Spencer Haywood's unique career was intense and so is "Supersonic".

Working with Kerwin Young and his Partner DJ Cool is brilliant. Atlantic or not, distances aren't relevant anymore, you just need the internet and things happen. Gotta say Kerwin's one of my favorite producers of all time, just thinking of Public Enemy's "House of the Rising Sun" for example or Eric B & Rakim's "Don't Sweat the Technique,” it's an honor to work with him and DJ Cool. The whole process of creating "Supersonic" was very intentional, I got this beat (what a production) and things clicked very fast. Musically and vocally, we all knew how "Supersonic" has to sound.

The SPITslam Group: Are you a basketball fan and do you play the game?  Follow European Basketball and/or the NBA?  Favorite Teams?

Gambit: Yea I do play the game, I used to play a lot of streetball, I mean . . . really A LOT . . .  Now it's less but I still love shooting some 3's here and there and show some youngsters how it's done – lol. I follow European Basketball just occasionally, NBA nearly every day, I’m checking NBA game results and match recaps frequently, I can say I’m up to date. Well . . . and regarding favorite teams . . . back then it was the Houston Rockets, especially the Hakeem Olajuwon & Clyde Drexler era, that was my team. Their championship run in ‘95 was highly impressive if you ask me, that sweep against Orlando, simply tremendous. Now it's the San Antonio Spurs, I like their style, they're highly effective and they got a very compact team chemistry, it's fun watching them.

The SPITslam Group: Anything you want to add?

Gambit: Yes, shout out to Chuck D, Kerwin Young, DJ Cool and the whole line up of the Spencer Haywood Movie Project, it's great to be part of this . . . going to be epic!
